Summary

New build health care practice in Scotland benefits from full MEP modelling with cutting-edge IT tools enabling remote collaboration for the digital design during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project

Badenoch & Strathspey Community Hospital is a new build healthcare practice based near Aviemore in Scotland. This project involved uplifting a consultant’s Stage 4 model through to construction and installation.

The model involved replacing the consultant’s intent with GA Barnie-specified equipment and redesign work to enable the installation to work within the working practices of the contractor. We achieved a high degree of collaboration between all design team members to ensure the final building was fit for purpose.

We supported the contractor, GA Barnie, with the delivery of this project and used the opportunity to hone the skills of our in-house Revit technicians. Collaboration-based tools such as BIMTrack for issue tracking and sample areas for review with Autodesk Viewer were used to keep none model author design team members involved. This project was hosted through BIM360 allowing various design team elements in England and Scotland to liaise directly with the digital design. This mitigated any delay in the project when staff migrated to remote working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtual reality walk-throughs were provided to the NHS Highlands FM team to indicate the maintainable infrastructure considerations. They were also used by the site installation managers to provide feedback on how they intended to install the services.

GA Barnie were very interactive with the modelling process and some great experience and site knowledge from their capable installation team was introduced into the digital design.
